Biography
Beat Mark, a French noise pop quartet, came together in 2009 to begin composing material. Drawing from the fuzzy pop approach of acts like the Pastels and the Vaselines while sharing stylistic traits with contemporaries such as Veronica Falls and Dum Dum Girls, the members Karin Schlageter on lead vocals and keys, Julien Perez on lead vocals and keys, Gaëtan Didelot on guitar and vocals, and Chloé Labaye on drums and vocals assembled a set of recordings. These attracted the interest of California-based Burger Records, which issued a seven-song cassette in 2010. The French label Final Taxi subsequently commissioned a full-length project, yielding the 2011 release of Howls of Joy. A pivotal opportunity arose when Cornershop’s Tjinder Singh, during a visit to a small record shop in Paris, heard several Beat Mark tracks selected by the owner. Struck by the music, he chose to re-release Howls of Joy on his Ample Play label in early 2013.
