Biography
Beaten Awake, assembled from Ohio's underappreciated indie rock royalty, sustain the melodic experimentation that distinguished their earlier projects. The lineup incorporates veterans of Party of Helicopters, the Man I Fell in Love With, Harriet the Spy, and New Terror Class, conferring an imposing pedigree. Kent rock veterans Allen Karpinski, Jon Finley, Ryan Brannon, and Joel McAdams formed the group in 2005 after converging at the same bar, where they began occasional jam sessions. A pair of demos soon followed, leading to tours with fellow Ohio natives the Black Keys and a period serving as Daniel Johnston's backing band. Their debut album, Let's Get Simplified, arrived in 2007 on Audio Eagle, the label operated by Patrick Carney of the Black Keys. Fat Possum issued the sophomore release Thunder$troke in October 2009.
