Biography
Emerging from Sydney, Australia in 2012, dolewave outfit Beef Jerk coalesced around the central partnership of Jack Lee and Mikey Branson. Dividing guitar duties and songwriting between them, the pair forged a scrappy lo-fi aesthetic shaped by the Fall, the Modern Lovers, and the Feelies. Two demos were tracked in that opening year before the 2013 release of the single “Schooners” on the band’s own Local Legends label. Drummer Jack Baxter, bassist Dean Adam, and guitarist Sam Wilkinson completed the group at the time. Side projects kept every member busy, especially vocalist Lee, who issued the solo cassettes Feline Fine in 2013 and Trophy Life in 2014 on Osborne Again. With Wilkinson no longer involved, Beef Jerk started work on its debut album in 2014 alongside engineer Peter Beringer at Audile Design Studio. Issued in 2015 on the band’s own imprint, Tragic drew positive notices and soon attracted the attention of Trouble in Mind Records, which re-released the album in mid-2016.
