Biography
Bellini emerged as a Euro-dance outfit based in Germany whose first release, the 1997 single “Samba de Janeiro,” turned into a major seasonal hit across the summer months and was succeeded across subsequent years by additional tracks that retained a comparable style yet achieved far smaller audiences. The project is anchored primarily by the Cologne-based production team of Ramon Zenker and Gottfried Engels, who operate under the Bellini Brothers moniker; the group itself honors Brazilian soccer icon Hilderaldo Bellini and draws its predominant sonic influence from Brazilian traditions. The act entered the studio for the first time in 1997, issuing “Samba de Janeiro” through Ritmo Latino; the track climbed to number two on the German singles chart and held a position inside the Top Ten for thirteen consecutive weeks. Riding that sustained momentum, the duo delivered the full-length project Samba de Janeiro: The Album the same year via Orbit Records. Later Ritmo Latino outings such as “Carnaval” in 1997, “Me Gusta la Vida” in 1998, and “Brazil” in 2001 never approached the earlier peak, with none rising above number 71 on the national chart. Parallel releases on Orbit Records—“Saturday Night” in 1999 and “Arriba Allez” in 2000—likewise registered only modest returns, as did the 2004 singles “Magalenha” on Kontor Records and “Tutti Frutti” on Gang Go Music. Occasional new material continued to appear, including “Let’s Go to Rio” in 2007 and “Hot Hot Hot” in 2008, timed largely to coincide with warmer seasons. A broad selection of these earlier tracks was later gathered on the 2001 Orbit Records anthology Samba de Janeiro: Non-Stop Best of Bellini.
