Biography
Among the contributors to the 1986 Pretty in Pink soundtrack—an anthology that showcased then-emerging new wave acts including the Psychedelic Furs, Echo & the Bunnymen, and the Smiths—Belouis Some ranked as the least familiar name. His spiky hairdo and booming voice nonetheless secured a brief spell of MTV exposure. Born Neville Keighley, he issued his debut album Some People in 1985, whose title track became a club favorite. Although the soundtrack entry “Round, Round” never crossed into mainstream radio, it widened his reach beyond dance floors. Bernard Edwards produced the track, which blended prominent electric guitars to attract rock listeners with a driving rhythm that retained dance-floor appeal.
“Imagination,” another cut from Some People, returned to circulation in 1986 and climbed to number 17 on the U.K. pop charts. Both “Some People” and “Imagination” received multiple remixes. The self-titled follow-up album arrived in 1987 yet failed to match the commercial performance of its predecessor. Some subsequently withdrew from public view, consigned to the era’s “Where Are They Now?” roster until the 1993 release of Living Your Life, on which he renewed his allegiance to club culture through an embrace of techno.
