Ben Johnston’s teachers included Darius Milhaud, Harry Partch, Burrill Phillips, Robert Palmer, and John Cage. He later served as professor of theory and composition at the University of Illinois. His output encompasses Somewhere I have never traveled, written in 1949 for tenor and piano; the tape composition Knocking Piece Collage from 1969; In Memory, Harry Partch, 1975, scored in 1975 for soprano, computer tape, tape, string quartet, eight percussionists, and slide show; Suite for Microtonal Piano, completed in 1978; and Twelve Partials, composed in 1980 for flute and microtonal piano. ~ "Blue" Gene Tyranny
