In 2001, Louisiana singer/songwriter Benjy Davis launched the Benjy Davis Project in Baton Rouge as a folk-rock duo. The initial roster featured only Davis and drummer Mic Capdevielle. The ensemble later grew to six members with the arrivals of Anthony Rushing on violin, mandolin, and vocals, Jonathan Lawhun on guitar and banjo, Brett Bolden on bass (subsequently replaced by Matt Rusnak), and Michael Galasso on harmonica, keyboards, and vocals. National opening slots for John Mayer, Better Than Ezra, and the North Mississippi Allstars, together with appearances at key regional events such as the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, helped the Benjy Davis Project develop a steady following. The band issued its debut album, More Than Local, on April 20, 2002, and the EP The Practice Sessions on May 4, 2004, both through self-release. Bogalusa put out the second full-length album, The Angie House, on September 27, 2005, after which Real Records oversaw the third release, Dust, on September 18, 2007.
