Born Élise Pottier, Berry stands out as a French singer/songwriter whose jazz-tinged sound draws heavily from the chanson française lineage and has drawn consistent critical praise. Her first full-length release, Mademoiselle, reached stores in 2008 on Mercury Records following work with composer/producer Manou and additional producers Lionel Dudognon and Erwin Autrique. Critics greeted the album warmly at launch, and it later earned a 2009 Victoires de la Musique nomination for Album Révélation de l'Année, or Best Album by a New Artist. From this project came the singles "Le Bonheur," "Demain," and "Mademoiselle," which helped sustain chart activity across much of 2008, including a peak at number 34; late that year Mercury issued a collector's edition containing bonus material.
