Bert Wilson, a saxophonist renowned for his inventive improvisational approach, stayed largely invisible beyond the most committed jazz aficionados. This resourceful and inventive musician, at ease across tenor, alto, and soprano, first surfaced in the 1960s via appearances on releases by Sonny Simmons and James Zitro. Only years afterward did Wilson begin fronting his own sessions, most of which appeared on his private FMO imprint and therefore never reached the wider audience they warranted. Those that surfaced instead on higher-visibility labels, such as 1986's The Next Rebirth and 1994's Endless Fingers, consistently drew strong praise from reviewers.
