Best Girl Athlete

Katie Buchan, the creative force behind Best Girl Athlete’s delicate, somber indie pop threaded with folk textures, grew up in a household centered on music. Her father, C.S. Buchan, a Scottish folk musician active across the northeastern region, occasionally brought her onstage to sing alongside him. After taking part in her grammar-school choir and picking up guitar, she began composing songs on her own and together with her father while still in her early teens. Beyond those shared performances, she supplied vocals for the opening track of Indian Red Lopez’s Commit in 2014 and secured a contract with her U.S. label at age 14. Best Girl Athlete’s debut album, Carve Every Word, appeared in early 2015 on Fitlike Records in the U.K. through her father’s label and on Minty Fresh in the U.S. While continuing to balance school commitments with recording, she postponed offers to tour abroad until spring.
