In May 1994 the ambient pop group Bethany Curve came together in Santa Cruz, California, with singers and guitarists Richard Millang and Ray Lake, bassist Chris Preston, and drummer David Mac Wha. Embracing the guiding principle “Atmosphere, Arrangement, Sound, Layering and Noise,” the quartet put out its first release, the cassette Mee-eaux, in 1995 and moved to Unit Circle the next year to deliver the album Skies a Crossed Sky. Bethany Curve returned in 1998 with Gold. The band issued You Brought Us Here three years afterward, though personnel shifts quickly followed: Preston exited immediately before the record appeared, and Lake left a few months later. Guitarist Nathan Guevara came aboard, allowing Bethany Curve to continue as a trio while promoting You Brought Us Here on the road. Classically trained cellist Daved Lockhart entered the lineup in late 2001, at which point the group signed with Kitchen Whore.
