Formed in New Jersey and blending blues with rockabilly, Better Off Dead features VD King on guitar and vocals alongside Don Kenny on guitar, Tim Cassidy on harmonica, Mike Kenny on drums, and Arthur Zo on upright bass. Active since 1995, the band took its name from a little-known Bill Withers single and secured an early opportunity after a Canadian concert promoter discovered one of their initial demos, which led to a three-night engagement at the 1996 Montreal Blues Festival. The group maintained a steady schedule of performances throughout the New York tri-state region, and in 1997 they put out their self-titled debut album, an effort that earned them slots at the NXNE Festival in Toronto during both 1998 and 1999 plus an appearance at New York’s Blues 2000 festival. Their second album, Girl With a Job, arrived in 2001.
