Biography
Bibi Black reached her early years in Huntsville, Alabama, without receiving the customary cautions that female trumpet players rarely advanced into professional ranks. At age eleven this gifted local musician launched her trumpet studies driven by strong ambitions. She continued her development at the Interlochen Arts Academy and later completed a Bachelor of Music degree at the Curtis Institute of Music.
Throughout an accomplished classical tenure, Bibi Black issued several solo recordings and claimed first place in the Philadelphia Orchestra’s Young Artists Competition as well as the Grahm-Stahl Competition. Before her twenty-fourth birthday she was appointed Second Trumpet of the Philadelphia Orchestra—the first woman ever to occupy the chair. Worldwide tours have taken her to stages with the Vancouver Symphony, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Camerate Musica of Berlin, and further ensembles.
