After losing his position at a New York pharmaceuticals firm, singer/songwriter Kurt Liebert channeled his energies into founding the musical endeavor Bicycle. He seized the moment by cycling from coast to coast, performing spontaneous shows alongside collaborator Forrest Burtnette—an experience that inspired the project's moniker. The distinctive mode of travel drew coverage from the press along with funding from several music institutions, prompting Liebert's relocation to Seattle where he could dedicate himself fully to his craft. That shift yielded the 1999 self-titled debut album, incorporating input from Burtnette as well as former Presidents of the United States member Chris Ballew, who handled production duties on five tracks and supplied backing vocals.
