Taking its name from Vittorio De Sica’s groundbreaking film, The Bicycle Thief came together after singer/songwriter/guitarist Bob Forrest watched his earlier band Thelonious Monster dissolve. Although Forrest toyed with stepping away from live performance altogether, associates within the Los Angeles music community urged him to continue composing and performing. He joined forces with Josh Klinghoffer, and the pair secured a deal with Goldenvoice, the regional promoter that had just launched its own imprint. To finish the band’s first full-length release, the 1999 album You Come & Go Like A Pop Song, Forrest and Klinghoffer enlisted Sugartooth members Josh Blum and Mark Hunter to serve as additional players and co-producers. Drummer Kevin Fitzgerald, previously of the Geraldine Fibbers, came aboard just in time to complete the final recordings.
