Biography
Bide composed numerous successes for leading voices of Brazil’s classic popular-song period and helped convert rural samba into a distinctly urban form during the opening decades of the twentieth century.
On 12 August 1928 he joined Ismael Silva, Mano Edigar, Brancura, and Baiaco to create Deixa Falar, the first recognized samba school. Working inside that collective, Bide and his colleagues detached samba from the maxixe rhythm and recast it for city listeners; around the same time he played cavaquinho behind Benedito Lacerda.
In 1927 Bide sold the samba “A Malandragem” to Francisco Alves, a routine transaction of the period, and the piece appeared without credit on Odeon the following year, becoming the dominant Carnival hit of 1928.
His extended partnership with Armando Marçal produced such enduring sambas as “Agora é Cinza,” which Mário Reis recorded in 1933, winning that year’s annual contest and generating repeated new versions, and “A Primeira Vez,” later recorded by João Gilberto. Bide also introduced the surdo drum into samba ensembles.
Deixa Falar entered two of his sambas, “O Meu Segredo” and “Rir pra Não Chorar,” in the 1932 annual contest. Bide discovered Ataulfo Alves and arranged the singer’s first recording session for Victor.
In 1934 Almirante recorded the marcha junina “Ninguém Fura o Balão,” written with Marçal, and “A Bênção, Papai Noel,” written with Alberto Ribeiro; that same year Mário Reis recorded “Nosso Romance,” another Marçal collaboration.
The next year Carmen Miranda recorded “Entre Outras Coisas” (with Valfrido Silva), Araci de Almeida recorded “Chave de Ouro” (with Roberto Martins), and Almirante recorded “Vem, Meu Amor” (with Mano Décio da Viola and João de Barro).
In 1936 Carlos Galhardo recorded “Você Não Sabe, Amor” (with Ataulfo Alves) and “O Palhaço, O Que É?” (with Paulo Barbosa); the latter became a major Carnival success in 1937, the same season Galhardo released “Sorrir” (with Marçal).
Two further Marçal collaborations, “Tua Beleza” recorded by Orlando Silva and “Meu Primeiro Amor” recorded by Francisco Alves, ranked among the leading hits of 1938.
Late in the decade Bide joined Marçal as a percussionist at Rádio Nacional, a post he held for nearly thirty years while appearing on countless sessions; one notable example is his contribution to Pixinguinha’s Velha Guarda on the 1955 Sinter album Carnaval da Velha Guarda.
Ataulfo Alves recorded “Não Posso Viver Sem Ela” (with Cartola) in 1941; an immediate success, the track was later re-recorded by the group Rosa de Ouro under the title “Mulher Fingida” on the LP Rosa de Ouro II.
