Hailing from Florida, Southern soul singer Big John Hamilton possessed a voice as commanding as his name and came to represent the very notion of being overlooked. Between 1967 and 1970 he recorded eight solo singles plus a pair of duets with Doris Allen—including their distinctive rendition of Buddy Miles’ “Them Changes”—for the Florida-based Minaret Records label, yet almost none of these sides registered beyond local audiences. In 2006 Sundazed Records gathered the complete set onto one CD titled How Much Can a Man Take. Its forceful title track, first released in 1968, still surfaces from time to time on soul anthologies and remains a standout.
