North Carolina MC and beatmaker BigBabyGucci carved a path through the trap realm of the 2010s and 2020s by issuing material at a nonstop clip, shaping sleek rhymes, sticky refrains, and vivid productions. The artist first surfaced in 2016 and gained ground via successive full-length projects, testing the waters of SoundCloud rap through the tail end of that decade before locking into a distinctive singing approach by the start of the next.
The 2016 single “Gucci Tears” and mixtape “A Fucking Mixtape” served as his entry point into the SoundCloud rap circuit, where the near-constant flow of releases kept momentum alive. Early work stayed rooted in the murky, low-end-driven trap sound then dominant, yet follow-up sets such as Art Hoe Collection (2016), Bigbabyxodus (2016), and Gucci Season 1 (2017) absorbed a broader range of contemporary trap approaches. Romance Is Dead (2017) introduced more left-field elements, Gucci’s Playground (2018) leaned on pronounced Auto-Tune, and Gucci’s Universe (2018) leaned into the lighter, playful side of the style. Two companion albums arrived in 2019—Universe 2, built around sweeping cinematic drama and tense vocal samples, and Send Help, a lighter trap affair that yielded the multi-million-stream single “Drop Top Lexus.” Between 2016 and 2019 the artist dropped more than fifty standalone tracks and guest appearances.
Output grew even heavier once the 2020s began. Concentrating on the Auto-Tune-heavy delivery explored toward the close of the prior decade, BigBabyGucci crystallized that vocal signature across the 2020 albums Teen Spirit and Isolated. Production continued shifting across three 2021 releases—the bass-forward Assume the Worst, the polished 1 Night I Took Acid, and the wide-ranging Human. The steady pace persisted into 2022 with Iridescence, Soda & Syrup, and Summer of Revenge, followed by Homesick in 2023. Later that year Colors became the first album conceived around a single idea, with every track built to match the sonic character of a chosen hue. Throughout these years the rapper-producer issued another thirty-plus singles and launched the label Better Temperatures, which issued the compilation BigBabyGucci Presents: Isolated 2.
