Canadian flutist Bill McBirnie has earned recognition for performances that merge jazz, classical, Latin, and Brazilian idioms. Early notice arrived through associations with Chucho Valdes and Emilie-Claire Barlow, after which he issued his own acclaimed recordings, among them the 2010 album Mercy recorded with pianist Robi Botos and the 2015 release Grain of Sand created with multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Bruce Jones, both of which received Toronto Independent Music Awards. The Juno Award-nominated The Silent Wish appeared in 2020 in partnership with pianist Bernie Senensky, while 2024 brought Reflections, a project paying tribute to legendary flutist Paul Horn.

Born in Toronto in 1953, McBirnie spent his formative years in the small Ontario community of Port Colborne. Piano served as his initial instrument until he abandoned it after a few years. A request for a recorder prompted his parents to supply a flute instead, leading to formal lessons, and he also spent time on clarinet before committing exclusively to the flute through private study with noted classical flutist Robert Aitken. After completing high school, he obtained a commerce and finance degree from the University of Toronto and later worked as an accountant. Jazz entered his awareness during his twenties, prompting study of improvisation modeled on players such as Paul Horn, John Coltrane, and Miles Davis.

Alongside his accounting duties, McBirnie sustained his musical development and acquired standing as a capable technician and inventive improviser. Engagements ensued, encompassing early recordings with Junior Mance, Chucho Valdes, and Emilie-Claire Barlow. As a leader, his first solo effort arrived with 1998’s Desvio, followed in 2003 by Nature Boy featuring pianist Mark Eisenman, an album that secured radio play in Canada. Paco Paco emerged in 2006 and included pianist Bernie Senensky. Additional honors arrived through three victories in U.S. National Flute Association Competitions, specifically Masterclass in 2003, Big Band in 2009, and Soloist in 2012.

McBirnie joined pianist Robi Botos for the 2010 album Mercy, which captured Best Jazz Album at the Toronto Independent Music Awards. A later reunion with Senensky produced 2013’s Find Your Place, recipient of the Vox Pop award at the Independent Music Awards. Further distinction came with 2015’s Grain of Sand, recorded with multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Bruce Jones, which won in the Best Instrumental album category at the Toronto Independent Music Awards. He also wrote the book The Technique and Theory of Improvisation: A Practical Guide for Flutists, Doublers, and Other Instrumentalists and functioned as the resident jazz flute specialist for the website of Irish flute virtuoso Sir James Galway.

In addition to his own projects, McBirnie appeared on several hits by Canadian contemporary jazz outfit Four80East, among them 2019’s “Cinco Cinco Seis” and 2020’s “Ba Ba Brazil.” The Silent Wish, his collaboration with pianist Senensky, earned a Juno Award nomination for Best Instrumental Album of the Year in 2020. On 2024’s Reflections, McBirnie honored his longtime inspiration, the late flute legend Paul Horn.
