Biography
Bill Van Loo works as a producer, musician, and DJ from his base in Ypsilanti, Michigan, roughly forty miles west of Detroit. From the middle of the 1990s onward he has shaped tracks that draw primary inspiration from Detroit techno figures such as Carl Craig and Derrick May alongside Berlin dub acts including Basic Channel and Rhythm & Sound, while also weaving in strands of jazz and hip-hop. He secured notable live bookings at Richie Hawtin’s 13 Below club and at the inaugural Detroit Electronic Music Festival. In 2001 he contributed a track to Planet E’s All Access to Detroit’s Music Festivals compilation, issued his own collection titled Chromedecay Tracks: 1996-2001, and released the single Tones (For Sarah) through Berlin’s City Centre Offices label. Around the same period he began instructing undergraduates in sound design at Detroit’s College for Creative Studies. The following year brought further activity: another self-released set, Live at Leopold Bros., a 12-inch recorded for Plug Research, and continued advancement within Detroit’s electronic-music community.
