The trombonist Billy Graham launched his recording activity in an era distinct from that of several earlier musicians sharing the identical name, none of whom bore any connection to the renowned evangelist. His initial documented work arrived in 1970 across three volumes titled Maynard Ferguson's Horn, placing him in brass sections on sessions spanning jazz/R&B, rock, and theatrical repertoire. These earliest dates found him stationed in London, rendering the Ferguson dates a British-centered undertaking that also featured trombonist Chris Pyne among the section peers. The assignment evidently strengthened embouchure endurance for subsequent demands, given Ferguson's penchant for submerging the lower brass beneath the force of four lead trumpets; on other occasions the leader would turn to his custom valve trombone, rendering Graham's contributions comparatively earthbound by contrast.

Graham's catalog further encompasses noteworthy collaborations with R&B vocalist Jimmy Witherspoon and the somewhat heavier rock outfit Bloodstone, both likewise dating from the first half of the 1970s, alongside a live Stan Kenton performance that remained unreleased for several decades. In the intervening years his appearances centered chiefly on theatrical soundtrack sessions, including pit duties for the London production of Cats and a comparable engagement with Kiss Me Kate. This artist is distinct from the Bill Graham who performed drums with Charlie Parker, from the baritone saxophonist who worked with Dizzy Gillespie and composed "Oh Sho Be Do Be," and from the trumpeter active in 1930s big bands.
