Biography
Prior to the contemporary revival of bagpipe traditions, Billy Pigg stood out as one of the instrument’s most pivotal exponents. Members of the Clough Family instructed him on the Northumbrian pipes, through which he championed the folk repertoire of the Anglo-Scottish border country. Although his studio work was abundant, a substantial share of the material existed only on privately held tapes. The Northumbrian Pipers Society released his autobiography, The Border Minstrel, in 1997; the volume drew on research by A.D. Schofield and was prepared for publication by Julia Sky.
