Biography
Bing Ji Ling serves as the chosen alias for Quinn Luke, a singer and songwriter based in New York City, with the name drawn directly from the Chinese term for ice cream. In this guise Luke crafts retro-inflected pop that draws from the psychedelic sounds of the 1960s and the soul traditions of the 1970s. Born in San Francisco, he issued the debut Bing Ji Ling album Doodle Loot Doot Doodle a Doo in 2003. He moved to New York City in 2005 and followed with his second album, Fire and Ice Cream, the next year. During 2009 Luke joined the Phenomenal Handclap Band—another group known for its psychedelic and pop leanings—both recording and touring in support of their self-titled first release. His third solo album, Shadow to Shine, appeared in 2011, with a return four years later via Sunshine for Your Mind.
