Binomio de Oro de America rose to prominence as one of the foremost acts in vallenato, the cumbia-adjacent style, after Israel Romero and Rafael Orozco launched the ensemble in 1976. Inspired by the “pure vallenato” path charted by Jorge Oñate, Colacho Mendoza, and similar figures, the pair began with traditional repertoire yet gradually folded in broader Latin influences that included cumbia. Romantic, sentimental, and forceful material, together with a refined stage presentation marked by coordinated outfits and choreography, steered the group toward worldwide recognition. Appearances throughout Venezuela, the Caribbean, and Panama built momentum, leading to their 1981 New York City bow at Madison Square Garden, where Colombian flags lined the hall.

Romero’s 1988 cancer announcement cast doubt on the band’s outlook. He sat out several 1989 dates, yet his condition stabilized and his participation increased. After an organized crime family he had ties to killed Orozco in 1993, Romero took sole leadership. Jean Carlos Centeno stepped in as vocalist and remained until retiring in 2005. Alejandro Palacio, a young singer, succeeded him and sang on the 2006 album Grafiti de Amor, which earned a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Cumbia/Vallenato Album.
