Biography
Bisco Smith, also known as Bisc1, works as both a rapper and graffiti artist while based in Brooklyn. Arriving in New York from Connecticut at 18, he built visibility throughout the 2000s via club DJ sets alongside a series of well-received mixtapes, EPs, albums, and visual pieces that earned him standing within the city’s underground hip-hop and art circles. The Basics EP appeared in 2006, with the mixtape The Stay Up Project arriving the following year. National attention followed in 2008 once the single “Turbulence” from When Electric Night Falls began circulating, prompting coverage in urban magazines such as The Source and Skunk. The Broadcast came out in 2010. His style aligns with other underground New York City artists through inward-focused lyrics set against dense, tightly wound production. Recognition of his graphic work among fellow hip-hop figures soon generated commissions ranging from Murs to El-P to Aesop Rock. He has created cover art, devised promotional assets, and handled art direction for imprints including Definitive Jux and Ninja Tune. A 2009 U.S. tour tied to When Electric Night Falls placed him on stages at festivals such as South by Southwest and Scribble Jam alongside performers like KRS-One and Jeru the Damaja.
