Biography
U.K. quartet Blue burst onto the scene in 2001, scoring repeated successes on the domestic singles chart through a series of polished pop/R&B releases. After unveiling their first full-length effort, All Rise, late that same year, the four members asserted lasting control over British pop with the subsequent One Love in 2002 and Guilty the following year, after which they stepped away from the spotlight. When they resurfaced a decade later, Blue—by then firmly embedded in the national music landscape—delivered three additional studio albums, among them Heart & Soul in 2022.
Duncan James and Antony Costa, having crossed paths repeatedly on the audition circuit, resolved in early 2000 to assemble their own band. They soon recruited Lee Ryan, another familiar face from those same rounds, together with Ryan’s flatmate Simon Webbe, a former professional footballer. A deal with Innocent Records quickly followed, placing the newly formed group under the guidance of various songwriting and production teams. Their opening single, “All Rise,” crafted by Norwegian production duo Stargate and drawn from the identically titled debut album, climbed to number four on the U.K. singles chart in May 2001 and lingered in the upper echelons for several weeks. Subsequent releases—a cover of Next’s American number-one hit “Too Close” and the original track “If You Come Back”—topped the chart in August and November, respectively. The album All Rise itself, blending rock and funk textures with pop ballads and brisk R&B grooves, entered at number four. Confirmation of their commercial standing arrived when One Love debuted at the summit of the U.K. album chart in November 2002. The following month the quartet reclaimed the singles pinnacle via a duet with Elton John on a refreshed rendition of his “Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word.”
Guilty, issued in 2003, sustained the group’s commercial momentum; its three singles—“Guilty,” “Breathe Easy,” and a version of Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours” featuring Wonder alongside Angie Stone—all registered inside the U.K. Top 20. A 2004 compilation introduced the new track “Curtain Falls,” and after a supporting tour the members declared an indefinite break. Lee Ryan and Simon Webbe each issued solo albums in 2005.
Blue resurfaced in 2009 with a performance at Silverstone Classic amid speculation of fresh material, yet no album appeared that year or the next. The band returned properly in 2011 with “I Can,” selected to represent the U.K. at the Eurovision Song Contest. Though the entry did not prevail, enthusiastic fan reaction encouraged further recording. During a 2012 summer concert in China the group previewed “Hurt Lovers,” then confirmed in October plans for a fourth studio album, Roulette. In early 2013 Blue joined fellow British pop acts Honeyz and Liberty X on The Big Reunion U.K. tour before issuing Roulette, which included the single “Without You,” in April. Two years later the quartet signed with Sony for their fifth album, Colours. Mixing covers with original songs, the set debuted at number 13 on the U.K. charts. Post-release touring continued across the U.K. while individual members pursued separate projects, with James and Costa turning to acting and Webbe and Ryan releasing solo work.
Marking the twentieth anniversary of their debut album in 2021, the band scheduled multiple arena performances throughout the U.K. for the following year. They also returned to the studio, resulting in the release of their sixth album, Heart & Soul, toward the close of 2022.
