Black Eyed Sceva existed only briefly from 1992 to 1996 and released just an indie demo tape, a single full-length CD, and one EP, yet the trio earned recognition as among the decade’s strongest acts, particularly inside the Christian music scene. Jeremy Post handled guitar and lead vocals, Brad McCarter played bass and sang backup, and Brent Nims sat behind the drums; the three formed a compact, locked-in unit whose muscular, angular style managed to feel both flexible and intense. Their compositions, marked by genuine poetic insight and thoughtful craft, captured the everyday rewards and struggles of Christian life at the time. Once Nims departed and Erik Herzog joined, the remaining members re-formed as the far darker Model Engine, a shift that appeared to sap some of their earlier vitality even while the songwriting itself kept maturing. After the label dropped them, the band dissolved and Post went back to college. The group took its name from a set of pretenders mentioned in the Book of Acts. They frequently collaborated with Bruce Winter of Toad the Wet Sprocket.
