Black Jesus, the rapper from Indiana, achieved his first broad national spotlight through the track "What That Thing Smell Like" together with its video, which held the top slot for nine months on Un-Cut, BET's late-night showcase. This Midwest MC entered the music scene in the mid-'90s by promoting live shows under his own production outfit, Scrilla Entertainment. He contributed to the launch of Before and After Records in 2000, then emerged as the label's breakout act the next year on the strength of the same song.
