Biography
Taylor Williams, who handled vocals and guitar, shifted his base from Salt Lake City, Utah, to Denver, Colorado, during 2008. To locate compatible players he posted a notice on the StonerRock.com message boards, which put him in touch with guitarist Morgan Carpenter, bassist Austin Michel, and drummer Gordon Koch. The resulting outfit adopted the name Black Sleep of Kali, taken from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and crafted a sound that echoed the brutal, dense post-metal approach of Mastodon and Baroness. That direction surfaced on a five-song demo cut the next year while the musicians played frequent shows at local clubs. Momentum built swiftly enough to secure a deal with Small Stone Records, yet Carpenter soon left to follow other musical pursuits. The remaining trio brought in Patrick Alberts on guitar and returned to Salt Lake City to complete their first album, Our Slow Decay, issued in 2010.
