Biography
Black Wine originated in Ocean Grove, New Jersey, where the group cultivated a hard-edged, straightforward punk sound that accommodated memorable melodic hooks without sacrificing its raw, unassuming edge. The trio coined the term “no-core” for their approach, reflecting their refusal to pledge loyalty to any single genre. Guitarist and vocalist Jeff Schroeck, previously of the Ergs, joined forces with bassist and vocalist Jason Nixon, formerly of Hunchback, and drummer and vocalist Miranda Taylor, another Hunchback veteran who also performs with Full of Fancy. The musicians began collaborating in 2009, issuing their self-titled debut on the respected New Jersey punk imprint Don Giovanni before the year ended; several months afterward came the 7" EP Dark Energy. In 2011 they delivered the full-length Summer of Indifference and backed it with extensive touring. Hollow Earth, released in 2012, broadened the band’s range by incorporating stronger power-pop and indie-rock elements, whereas 2014’s Yell Boss returned to a stripped-down, punk-driven style that nevertheless featured a tough yet faithful reading of the Guess Who’s “No Time.”
