Biography
Blake Morgan stands out as a Maverick recording artist, producer, activist, and multi-instrumentalist whose command of the studio, incisive songwriting, and knack for merging sharp post-punk edges with AM pop hooks and open-road indie rock have secured him a devoted base of both critics and fans. In 1997 he entered a seven-record agreement with Phil Ramone’s N2K imprint that yielded the favorably received Anger's Candy, yet he soon grew frustrated with the inflexible, corporate machinery surrounding rock music. Following a well-attended tour on which he shared bills with Joan Jett and Matchbox Twenty, he located a contractual escape clause that let him exit the deal with minimal collateral damage. That exit proved advantageous: he established his own independent imprint, ECR Music Group, in New York City, which in turn issued a series of well-regarded albums—2005’s potent Burning Daylight, 2006’s acoustic and soulful Silencer, and 2013’s politically charged Diamonds in the Dark. During the same period Morgan launched the #IRespectMusic campaign, an effort aimed at safeguarding musicians’ rights amid the emerging digital landscape. In his role as producer he has collaborated with an array of artists that includes Lesley Gore, James McCartney, Patti Rothberg, and Lenny Kravitz. His fifth studio album, the expansive Violent Delights, appeared in 2022; Morgan has described the record as a fusion recalling the Police’s Ghost in the Machine and AC/DC’s Back in Black.
