Blank launched their journey by performing at all-ages punk gatherings held in basements and fire halls around the Annapolis, Maryland vicinity beginning in 1992. Their sound fused the raw, explosive energy of the era with the sincere pop sensibilities and melodic hooks favored by East Bay acts such as Samiam and Jawbreaker, while also drawing on the sharper, more fragmented textures associated with nearby Washington, D.C. outfits Jawbox and Nation of Ulysses. Each track balanced disorder and immediate catchiness, allowing brightly infectious melodies to strain against layers of sonic turbulence. The original configuration featured five members: Ryan Shelkett handling vocals, Kerry Silanskis and Noah Chace sharing guitar duties, Shannon Mitchell on bass, and John Welch behind the drums.

The band later relocated to Baltimore’s compact but active indie-rock community, distinguishing themselves as one of the few local underground acts to emphasize melodic material. During this phase they issued their debut full-length release, The Tab Street Affair, through Vermin Scum and 2% Muscle Records while cultivating a modest yet devoted audience across the Annapolis–D.C.–Baltimore corridor. In 1996 the lineup contracted to a quartet, with Shelkett assuming additional guitar responsibilities and a fresh rhythm section introduced through Tom Kerner on bass and Leroy Blades III on drums.

This revised configuration, paired with Shelkett’s increasingly refined songwriting, shifted the emphasis from noise toward clearer melodic structures and broadened their reach. The group then cut The Race EP for Reptilian Records, the Baltimore-based punk imprint, and embarked on a national tour in support. One year afterward they resumed extensive roadwork across the United States. In 1997 they tracked Anywhere but Here, the final album before disbanding. Over their five-year existence the band contributed tracks to multiple compilations and maintained a steady output of singles on various independent labels.

Following the split, Shelkett formed the emo-rock quartet Cross My Heart, which issued three albums on the New York independent label Deep Elm.
