Biography
Originating in Sacramento, California, the duo Blank Gloss focuses on minimalist ambient music infused with an earthy pastoral character. Their expansive instrumental works blend electronic textures, piano, and guitar to conjure the vast terrains of the American West. Following their initial release in 2020, the pair joined the roster of Germany’s Kompakt label and issued two subsequent albums: Melt in 2021 and Cornered in 2023.
Sacramento musicians Patrick Hills and Morgan Fox emerged from assorted local thrash and experimental ensembles before uniting to craft understated, introspective material as Blank Gloss. Frequently linked to the ambient country micro-genre, they fashion unsettling, undulating sonic vistas built from low, twanging guitars and stacked electronic hues that mirror the open skies and arid expanses of their surroundings. Their largely improvised debut album, January, appeared in 2020 via the Florida-based Night Young imprint. The next year they aligned with the esteemed German indie Kompakt, which put out the follow-up Melt.
