Biography
French producer BLNDR cultivated a deep, dubby strain of ambient techno and issued material at irregular intervals through Annulled, Silent Season, and Hypnus, the last of which issued his first album, the entirely ambient L'Observatoire, in 2018. Born Tom Huthwohl in Paris, he drew initial inspiration from Warp Records IDM pioneers such as Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, and Autechre. His earliest release, the digital-only 303 Jam, surfaced in 2014 on Planet Rhythm and leaned toward acid techno. After uploading demos to an MP3-sharing platform, he connected with Ntogn, founder of the nascent Swedish imprint Hypnus, and became one of its earliest signings. The label’s 2014 debut EP from him, The Untitleds, established its signature aesthetic through deep, hypnotic, and subtly psychedelic techno textures; several further EPs followed on Hypnus as he continued to sharpen that approach. Frequent performances helped him gain recognition both as a DJ and in live settings. Additional releases appeared on Natch Elements, Annulled, and Silent Season, where he adjusted his palette—sometimes toward harder edges, sometimes toward greater dub influence—while preserving an unmistakable core. He contributed a track to Semantica’s 2017 compilation Arquitectura del Sueño, and the next year Hypnus presented L'Observatoire, a calm, fully ambient work shaped as much by Air, Alan Hawkshaw, Actress, Burial, and Oneohtrix Point Never as by any fellow producers.
