Emerging from Columbus, Georgia, during the 1990s, the lighthearted quartet Blue Flannel adopted its moniker to poke fun at the flannel-heavy aesthetic of Seattle grunge. Whereas that scene often traded in furious, angst-filled verses, the group—launched by vocalist Derek Coile—favored offbeat, playful wordplay instead. Coile initially approached the project as little more than a casual diversion rather than a serious endeavor. Once guitarist Derek Montgomery, bassist John Barry, and drummer Eric Talbot joined the lineup and the foursome began drawing modest crowds at Georgia gigs, however, he started treating the band as a viable profession. Continued regional touring throughout the Southeast eventually led to a contract with MCA, which issued the debut album XL in September 1998 along with its cheeky single “Having A Bad Day.”
