Bluemolly traces its roots to the mid-'90s, when the musicians performed under the name Ed's Too Short. After issuing a debut album through Birdcage Records and building a substantial audience, Ed's Too Short completed a lengthy run of shows throughout the Southwest. Creative differences eventually prompted the group to disband in 1998. The three remaining members—Marcos Alves on vocals and guitar, Thom Martinez on bass, and Mario Santillan on drums—chose to continue as a trio and adopted the name Bluemolly. Retaining the core sound of understated alternative pop/rock while incorporating authentic textures and straightforward melodies, the band spent more than two years shaping its first recording. Production duties went to Marc Luperini and Ed Stasium, whose prior credits included work with the Ramones and Soul Asylum, and the resulting album, Waited So Long, appeared in 2001.
