An English singer-songwriter performing under the name Bo Bruce rose to prominence as runner-up on the 2012 season of the British television competition The Voice. She was born Lady Catherine Brudenell-Bruce into an aristocratic family and grew up in the quiet Wiltshire hamlet of Marlborough. She set aside the cumbersome title to launch a music career, entering numerous talent contests under her chosen stage name. Her earliest opportunity arrived in 2009 on Channel 4’s Orange unsignedAct, where she finished fourth. Although eliminated, her performances of original material drew offers from several labels, all of which she declined in favor of issuing the self-released EP Search the Night in 2010. She continued undaunted, auditioning for the BBC’s The Voice in 2012. After both will.i.am and Danny O’Donoghue of the Script expressed interest in her distinctive, Sinéad O’Connor-esque vocal delivery, she selected O’Donoghue as her mentor. During the program she advanced through public votes with interpretations of songs including Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie,” revealing the breadth of her voice and personality. She ultimately finished second to the powerful Leanne Mitchell, yet signed with Mercury and issued her debut album Before I Sleep in 2013. Later that year she joined Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody on the track “The Rage That’s in Us All,” which featured on the Star Trek: Into Darkness soundtrack.
