Primarily known as a folk musician, Bob Davis has distinguished himself most through his work as a sound and theatrical designer, soundtrack producer, and college professor. Since 1976 he has held a teaching position at City College in New York, and he has also instructed students at Solano Community College and San Francisco State University. His music and sound design appear on the CD-ROMs Secret Paths in the Forest and Secret Paths to the Sea, while his compositions have been featured in stagings by A Traveling Jewish Theater, California Shakespeare Festival, and Soon 3 Theater and have been interpreted by the Kronos Quartet. Audiences in California and New York have attended performances of his solo show Banjo.

Davis created theatrical designs for Topograhical Edeb at the Magic Theater, Waiting for Godette at Theater Rhinoceros, and The Bad Seed by the Acme Famous Players. He supplied set design and soundtrack production for the film Vegas in Space and oversaw sound effects for the movie ex Is=8A. In addition, he publishes the quarterly magazine Lady Like and collaborated for two years with Carol Kleinmaier on a history of transgender sexuality.
