Biography
Led by harpist and poet Tym Morys, this Welsh-language folk group began its career through busking before seeking to place its regional traditions inside a modern framework. Adding Gorwell Roberts on guitar, the ensemble took to modest stages across North Wales, describing its approach in its own words as “mutating” Welsh folklore and songs. Several touring acquaintances were later brought in as backing musicians: Edwin Humphries on brass and reed, Hefin Hughes on drums, Jimmy Dore on bass, and Breton fiddler Nolwenn Korbel. The 1990 release Sgwarnogod Bach Bob arrived bright and buoyant, whereas the follow-up Bob Dolig EP offered improvised free-music treatments of seasonal Christmas folk material. Issued on the Crai Records co-operative label, Gedon blended robust concepts with Breton inflections, proving both eccentric and striking while centering a set of original compositions aimed chiefly at dancers. The ensemble’s long-delayed third album proved noticeably more restrained and introspective than its predecessors.
