Biography
Bob Lanois entered the world in Gatineau, Canada, as the elder sibling of singer, songwriter, and producer Daniel Lanois. Beyond this family connection, he has established himself as a forward-thinking music producer while also pursuing roles as a harmonica player, photographer, abstract artist, and filmmaker. Among his other pursuits, Lanois constructs recording facilities, beginning with the one he put together during the early 1970s inside his mother’s basement in Ancaster, Ontario. He later created and operated the renowned Grant Avenue Studio in Hamilton, Ontario, a space that drew Brian Eno to refine his ambient post-Roxy Music aesthetic. In 2005, Lanois and singer-songwriter Tom Wilson, working as a duo, issued the widely praised The Shack Recordings. The following year saw the arrival of his debut solo effort, Snake Road, featuring evocative, near-dub harmonica instrumentals shaped by Daniel Lanois inside Bob’s cabin studio on the outskirts of Hamilton.
