Bob Porter set himself apart from conventional record producers by functioning as a studio specialist who revived the legacies of jazz and R&B for present-day listeners, applying careful remastering techniques to older tracks so they matched the crispness and impact that digital-era audiences had come to expect. In regular partnership with Atlantic Records he explored the imprint's deep catalog, restoring landmark performances by Duke Ellington, Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Ray Charles and Richard "Groove" Holmes. His meticulous work thereby safeguarded many of the twentieth century's most enduring recordings, delivering them to subsequent generations in markedly improved sonic condition.
