Biography
Following his military discharge, Pickett relocated to Los Angeles in 1961 with aspirations of launching an acting career. Upon arrival, he became part of the vocal ensemble known as The Cordials. Having honed an impression of Boris Karloff, he collaborated with fellow Cordials participant Leonard Capizzi on the composition of "Monster Mash," capitalizing on the popularity of the Mashed Potato dance trend. This Halloween success featured backing from The Crypt-Kickers, whose members included Leon Russell, Johnny McCrae, Rickie Page, and Gary Paxton in the producer's role. Although Pickett achieved a handful of additional modest chart entries, his enduring recognition stems from this singular blockbuster recording.
