Born on 13 June 1940 in San Francisco, California, Freeman earned acclaim as the city’s pioneering rock ‘n’ roll figure through the breakthrough success of ‘Do You Want To Dance’. The 1958 chart-topping single later received definitive covers from the Beach Boys and Cliff Richard. Additional recognition arrived in 1964 via ‘C’mon And Swim’, a dance-craze novelty number that Sly Stone produced and helped compose. Freeman subsequently chose to perform his material at a neighborhood topless venue, yet his later turns at the yearly San Francisco Bay Area Music (‘Bammy’) awards confirmed his skill as a stage artist.
