Bobby Kray first encountered Bob Marley after absorbing the sounds of the Clash and the Police. His discovery took place inside Blackerdreads, the reggae record store in Brixton, U.K., where Garfield Hackett and Nnamdi Ogugua from the Black Allianz label sought out the shop’s well-known “skinny white boy.” That same singer regularly traveled from Notting Hill’s Landbroke Grove to perform over reggae instrumentals and dubs for customers. The label paired the vocalist with U.K. reggae legend Dennis Bovell, nicknamed “Blackbeard,” for a single session; the immediate rapport between producer and artist soon expanded their work into a full album. Titled Tales from a White Skinny Boy, the project appeared on the V2 label in 2007, led by the Eek-A-Mouse collaboration “Main Man” as its opening single.
