Having spent a quarter-century refining his skills across venues in his hometown of Washington, D.C., as well as in New York City and Chicago, singer-songwriter Bobby Radcliff reached his artistic peak at age 45 during the late 2000s. Born on September 22, 1951, he was raised in Bethesda, Maryland, which placed him within reach of the capital’s blues clubs, where he absorbed lessons from artists such as Bobby Parker. Prior to finishing high school, Radcliff made multiple journeys to Chicago to connect with his hero, Magic Sam Maghett, a pursuit made possible by the emerging blues scene then taking root in Washington. He first picked up the guitar at twelve, initially pursuing classical training until his instructor introduced him to blues, after which he acquired every blues guitar recording within reach.

Radcliff relocated to New York City in 1977 and spent his days working at a bookstore until 1987, when club earnings allowed him to abandon that position. Following the signing of his recording contract with BlackTop Records, he has completed more than a dozen tours across the United States, Canada, and Europe, with his intense guitar work consistently drawing festival audiences. Three albums on the BlackTop label highlight his songwriting, guitar technique, and soulful vocals: the 1989 debut Dresses Too Short, Universal Blues from 1991, and There’s a Cold Grave in Your Way, issued in 1994. His earlier 1985 LP on the A-Okay label, Early in the Morning, remains a sought-after item among collectors.
