Biography
Body Meπa assembles four seasoned figures drawn from New York’s intersecting worlds of jazz, indie rock, experimental composition, and free improvisation into an instrumental collective. Their interplay suggests an uncommon, near-superhuman rapport, yielding compositions that feel jagged yet expansive, unfolding with deliberate patience and natural momentum. The quartet’s first full-length effort, The Work Is Slow, surfaced in 2020; two years later it was succeeded by the still more atmospheric Prayer in Dub.
The group took its name from Ornette Coleman’s 1978 album Body Meta. Its lineup comprises drummer Greg Fox (Zs, Ex Eye, Liturgy), guitarist and veteran music journalist Sasha Frere-Jones (Ui, Dustdevils), bassist Melvin Gibbs (Sonny Sharrock, Arto Lindsay, Rollins Band), and guitarist Grey McMurray (Sō Percussion, Alarm Will Sound). The musicians tracked The Work Is Slow across just two days in February 2020, then issued it themselves as a digital release before the year ended; Hausu Mountain later handled the 2021 physical editions. The band’s second album, the transcendent Prayer in Dub, was captured the following year and appeared in 2024.
