Emerging from Northern California, rapper BOE Sosa launched viral recordings of his street rhymes while still in his teenage years, with content that often struck as violently callous for someone so young. Following a period of incarceration in mid-2018 tied to accusations of armed robbery participation, BOE finished his initial mixtape Mirland, incorporating numerous singles that had already gained recognition.

BOE Sosa, where the acronym stands for "Brothers Over Everything," was raised in Sacramento's Oak Park area. Developing his skills in lyrics and vocal delivery from a young age, he started rapping during early adolescence and achieved initial successes through numbers such as "Off the Porch" and "Keep It Wit Me" back in 2017 at the age of 16. The unpolished quality of his words paired with West Coast-style production left a strong mark, resulting in song videos accumulating millions of views. During May 2018, authorities took Sosa into custody regarding suspicion of an armed robbery occurring at a local gas station. This incident stemmed from a complicated drug transaction that failed, with those affected reporting to authorities that Sosa had brandished a firearm and taken three pounds of marijuana, basing their identification on his popular online videos. Although Sosa served time behind bars, the legal proceedings concluded with dismissal of the case and dropping of every charge. Right after getting out in June 2018, Sosa released the single "First Day Out," which detailed his experience with the arrest. In the autumn of that year he assembled multiple tracks for the debut mixtape Mirland, and he followed up with the second mixtape 16 prior to the year's conclusion.
