Biography
Bogus Blimp came together in January 1996 as a cinematic, noir-ish avant-rock outfit in the modest Norwegian community of Sanderfjord. Early signings to Jester Records—the label run by Ulver/Arcturus frontman Christopher Rygg—included the group, whose experimental and electronic leanings plus shadowy, filmic atmospheres aligned with roster mates such as Single Unit, the post-Nattens Madrigal incarnation of Ulver, and the Disguised Masters phase of Arcturus, while the band retained its own elusive identity. Placement on Jester incidentally drew coverage from metal-oriented outlets, particularly black-metal-focused ones, and won support from a portion of that listenership despite an absence of any metal elements. The sextet comprises vocalist Christian Mona, organist/keyboardist Aslak Larsen, guitarist Hilmar Larsen, bassist Kyrre Bjørkås, sampling keyboardist Bjørn Larsen, and drummer Ragnar Berg. Their debut, the twenty-five-minute mini-album Men-Mic, appeared on Jester in 1999; the full-length cords. wires. followed in 2000. Around the latter’s issuance, most members had relocated to Oslo to gain proximity to Norway’s creative center and to continental Europe. In 2001 the band released the home video By Five 0=Clock Tea, highlighting frontman Mona’s visual work and marking the end of their original five-year plan.
