Biography
Tracing its roots to 1776, the Bolshoi Theater Orchestra began as a 13-member ensemble supporting vocalists in Moscow’s first permanent theatrical company. Over the years it has participated in the world premieres of many ballets and operas—later cornerstones of the Russian canon—by Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Prokofiev, and Shostakovich. Today the orchestra numbers roughly 200 musicians, most of them graduates of the Bolshoi Musical Academy. In addition to its regular season in Moscow, the group has appeared in Japan, England, the United States, and across Europe. The principal players of every section also form the chamber ensemble known as the Ensemble of the Soloists of the Bolshoi Theater Orchestra.
