Scott Johnson, who handled vocals and songwriting duties, teamed up with guitarist Bryan Ward to launch Bonepony in Baltimore during 1989. After shifting to Nashville as a pair in 1991, the two connected with producer Kenny Mims, who joined the group as a full member. Capitol Records signed them in 1994 and issued their first album, Stomp Revival, the following year. Mims soon exited, prompting the arrival of Tramp, whose contributions covered an assortment of stringed instruments. Capitol dismissed the band in 1997 after turning down their planned second album. Johnson, Ward, and Tramp then spent time refining new songs in rehearsal, which led to the 1998 taping of Traveler's Companion. The independent SuperDuper label they ran themselves put the record out in 1999.
